Fall of 2025

Huntington Beach, CA

Another beautiful and busy summer is coming to an end for us in SoCal. The weather this summer has been outstanding, on the cool side, but calm and clear. We enjoyed 32 days on Rascal at the island with friends from SYC and BWCC. Lots of social gatherings in the hood and lots of time to relax between boat, house and club projects.

Preparations for our return to Greece and Raffaellesco are getting easier every time. All indications are that Raffaellesco is doing well and our generator has been repaired in our absence.

Presently I am pacing the floor in anticipation of our return and because I have a critical delivery schedule for Raffaellesco. We need to be in Genoa by October 20 to have Raffaellesco loaded on a ship bound for the Caribbean, St Thomas to be precise. A lot of things need to go just right to make that happen. Not the least of which is covering over 900 miles from Lefkas, Greece to Genoa, Italy.

 Raffaellesco Spring ‘25   Huntington Beach, CA Winter ’24-‘25 It was a mild winter in HB, two rainstorms and some fog, otherwise sunny and temperate. We did a lot of work on Rascal; bottom paint, replaced the dripless packing and various other chores from the never-ending list. Aside from the trip to the Marina Shipyard for bottom paint, we only did one cruise with Shoreline Yacht Club. It was a fun weekend in Alamitos Bay visiting Seal Beach Yacht Club and Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club.  Today is a celebration of life for my friend Rich Darling. I wish I could be there to honor him. With out his belief in me I would not be where I am today. I have learned a lot from him and will always cherish the memories. I know he will rest in peace as he has touched the world in so many positive ways. May 20, 2025 – Adamantas, Milos, Greece A very calm night and a sunny calm morning. We were up and underway early only to discover that we had a “Check Engine” light on. We checked the Yanmar book, finding no serious issues listed for the Check Engine light. The vitals all looked good and there were no lose ground wires or connections. The decision was made to proceed. We motor sailed in favorable but light breezes and sunshine. The sea was calm with a tiny swell on our nose. The passage from Milos to Monemvasia was about 70 miles and the channel was full of ships, tugs with barges, fishing boats towing what looked like a section of fish farm and pleasure boats.  March 23, 2025 – Bar Marina, Montenegro An overcast rainy day with plenty of time for writing and reading. I always have maintenance items and things to check just to break up the day. I have been concerned about the health of my batteries. I checked the battery chargers, two for the house batteries, and discovered that the factory installed charger was set to lead acid not AGM. I have AGM which like a lower voltage and higher amperage. I switched the charger to the proper setting and will now monitor the batteries more closely. I spent a great deal of time just researching to learn more about the batteries and how to maintain and test them with the equipment that I have on the boat. The rain let up after lunch giving us the opportunity to go exploring Bar. The promenade along the shore is a paved path lined with palms and olive trees.
